Post Surgical Rehab

Many times, after surgery, physicians refer patients to physical therapy with the goal of returning them to their own optimal strength, function and mobility. Our therapists provide one-on-one, evidence-based physical therapy treatment sessions to help facilitate your recovery and return to activities of daily living (ADLs), work, recreational activities and even competitive sports. During the course of your recovery, we maintain regular communication with your surgeon to ensure your progress matches the rate of tissue healing.

The rehabilitative process depends on the injury and type of surgery. We help patients recover and rehabilitate from a variety of orthopedic post-operative procedures, including:

  • Knee, hip and shoulder joint replacements
  • Reconstruction of any one or more of the four major knee ligaments: anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
  • Arthroscopic knee surgeries (such as meniscectomies, meniscal repairs)
  • Ligament and tendon repair, including Achilles tendon repairs
  • Arthroscopic hip surgeries (such as labral repairs)
  • Nerve releases (such as cubital tunnel, radial tunnel, carpal tunnel, tarsal tunnel)
  • Neck and back surgery (such as fusions, laminectomy, decompression and discectomy)
  • Nerve compression release
  • Bone or joint fusion (arthrodesis)
  • Tendon transfers
  • Shoulder post surgical recovery
  • Surgical fixation of fractures, including open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), a two-part surgery used to fix broken bones where the broken bone is reduced (put back into place) and an internal fixation device is placed on the bone (e.g., screws, plates, rods or pins) to hold the bone together
  • Shoulder surgery, including rotator cuff repairs, labral repairs, arthroscopic surgery, subacromial decompression and more.

Physical therapy is an important part of your care following orthopedic surgery. Following surgery, you may experience pain, a limitation in motion, difficulty walking, difficulty performing daily activities, and a limitation in strength. While these are all a normal part of having a surgical procedure, a physical therapist can help you overcome these challenges and return to normal movement.

Your physical therapist will evaluate your strength and range of motion, and assess your pain post-surgically. They will work with any guidelines provided by your surgeon to develop an exercise program that is specific to your individual needs. Your therapist will assist you in achieving your goals and returning to the activities you enjoy. They will use many different techniques to help ease your pain, improve your mobility, and ultimately help you attain your goals and get you back to your previous level of function.

These techniques may include:

  • Manual Therapy – specialized hands-on techniques to facilitate movement, and functional control
  • Therapeutic Exercise – from active range of motion, to advanced strengthening protocols, your physical therapist can help you to regain the motion and strength needed to perform your daily activities
  • Modalities – Heat, ice, taping techniques, and electrical stimulation Functional Retraining – many activities require specialized balance, movement patterns, and dynamic flexibility and stability. Post-surgical rehabilitation includes retraining the movements that are specific to your interests.
  • Gait Training – your physical therapist will help you restore your normal walking pattern and help you learn to use an assistive device if needed temporarily following your surgery.
